This is when students are asked to nominate their peers as gifted. Usually this is best to be structured in some way - for example by giving students a set of questions such as "If the teacher was sick who would best replace them as a teacher?" or "Who would solve a very tricky maths problem most quickly?". It may be beneficial to give this set in combination with questions for other domains of giftedness.
Advantages
Peers may observe different aspects of students than teachers.
Peers will often ignore misbehaviour and focus more on intelligence and aptitude.
Disadvantages
Peers may be more likely to nominate their friends.
Peers may not be aware of the difference between giftedness, and high achievement due to hard work.
